Heiligman presents the nomadic mathematician Paul Erdős as an appealing eccentric: for instance, Paul referred to children as "epsilons" ("a very small amount in math"). Each of Pham's illustrations is a puzzle for the reader to solve, with complex numerical concepts integrated into the pictures. While the overall layout is high in appeal, the font size is too small for the target audience.

(3) PS Illustrated by Tim Bowers. Tinka the dog is described in a variety of inventive rhymes as the story of her lost-and-found adventure in the snow unfolds. Bowers tempers the cartoonish quality of his illustrations with scratched lines that simulate the texture of old paintings, echoing the rhyming text's combination of modernity and sentiment.

(3) YA When Rachel overhears her beloved rabbi having illicit sex, it's another huge disillusionment in her life: her grandmother is ailing, her parents are fighting, her best friend isn’t speaking to her, and she doesn’t know what to do with the boy she likes. There's a lot going on, but Heiligman pulls it all together for an intense read.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Tim Bowers. Pup Tinka (Fun Dog, Sun Dog) is lonely when her boy starts school. She causes a ruckus when she decides to join him. While waiting for someone to retrieve Tinka, the children come up with a way (not entirely believable) to incorporate her into the classroom. Heiligman's rhyming text is catchy but becomes a bit repetitive. Bowers's acrylic-on-board illustrations are energetic.
