(3) PS Illustrated by Lauren Tobia. This ebullient book is, at face value, a rhyming ode to babies on the go ("strolling in buggies and backpacks and slings, / rolling in store aisles in car seats and things"). But Tobia's art, depicting a bustling supermarket, a ride on a crowded bus, and more, turns it into a celebration of city life and families of many permutations.

(3) PS Illustrated by Paul Howard. This book depicts toddler-friendly activities, from playing peek-a-boo to learning to walk ("Stand / wobble. / Sway / wobble. / Bump! / Step / walk / toddle!"). The rhythmic text is less a story than a set of descriptions, perfect for little ones with short attention spans. Gentle pastel and watercolor illustrations show expressive toddlers of differing ethnicities looking as cute as can be.

(3) K-3 Joe and his grandma love to garden: they dig in late fall, think in winter, plant in spring, water in summer, and harvest in fall, all while "the good brown earth got on with doing what the good brown earth does best." Gram works methodically while Joe strews his seeds, but at the end of this lovely paean to nature they each have abundant vegetables depicted with joyful mixed-media art.

(3) PS Illustrated by Brita Granstrom. A baby indulged with toys of every description and a wide variety of chairs and cribs would rather play with house keys and fall asleep snuggled up with her family. The simple, rhyming story about what it really takes to satisfy a baby is humorous and realistic. Granström's loose-limned sketches tinted with Oxenbury-esque pastel colors feature a large, round baby who almost crawls off the page.

(3) PS Illustrated by Tony Kerins. This lovely recognition of the physical milestones a baby reaches in the first year of life--smiling, rolling over, crawling, etc.--poetically conveys the magnitude of each new achievement. A combination of dreamy soft-focus paintings and pencil sketches show baby and family indoors and out, reflecting the day-to-day rhythms of their life together as the seasons change.

(2) K-3 Exhilarated by the wind blowing in from the sea, Jim spreads his arms and shouts, "All this is mine!" The wind, however, becomes a gale; sirens sound; and Jim and his mother run to safety at Grandma's house up the hill. And next morning, looking out over a quiet sea, Jim whispers to the wind, "All this is yours." Nature's power, suggested in the simple, lyrical words describing the storm, is celebrated in all its beauty in the mixed media art.
