DK Biography series.
These biographies trace the private lives and political careers of two U.S. presidents. The readable texts incorporate anecdotes (e.g., in a letter, a young girl suggests Lincoln grow a beard) into the presentation of basic facts. Period photographs, reproductions, an illustrated header, and sidebars appear on almost every page, making the layouts busy and crowded. Timeline, websites. Bib., ind. Review covers these DK Biography titles: George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

"The seals on the bus go / errp, errp, errp, / All around the town." The animals have taken over a favorite preschool song in this wild bus ride. The mayhem rises as a different animal boards at each stop--geese, monkeys, rabbits, and a scowling though hardly fearsome tiger driver. The match-up of text and art is completely successful, with the silly but symmetrical variant of the song playing it straight to Karas's haywire illustrations. Don't miss the ride.

In this collection, the maestro claps her feet, a groundhog brings valentines on Christmas Eve, and purple oranges are lemony sweet. Although individual poems are amusing, as a whole they become predictable. The zany collages using cut paper and magazine photographs perfectly capture the mood of the poems.

Instructions for setting up and executing more than twenty treasure and scavenger hunts are divided into six categories ("Hunting for Hidden Objects," "Car and Bus Treasure Hunts"). Lively black-and-white line drawings help break up the small, dense print of the text, but the monochrome appearance of the page is still unwelcoming. Safety reminders are a prominent--and humorous--feature. Bib.
