As in previous titles by Hurley (Nest, Hop), each double-page spread of Beehive contains one word, with a full-bleed digital illustration making it clear what that word means in a bee's life. The striking lay spread, for example, shows a close-up of a bee adding an egg to a nest; collect shows two busy bees gathering nectar from flowers. An appended author's note connects these same words to paragraphs expounding on the lives in hives.

In this simple picture book, each spread shows one or more ingredients of a color named in the very spare text: "yellow" (corn and onion) / "orange" (carrots) / "white" (salt and garlic cloves); then it's "chop / drop / bubble / yum." Preschoolers may enjoy identifying each ingredient in the pleasing digital illustrations that mimic cut-paper art. The full recipe for "Every Color Soup" is appended.

In a similar format to her previous books (Hop; Fetch; Nest), Hurley's latest story consists of one verb on each spread. This time, she explains the journey of a frog from egg to tadpole, then adult and egg-laying parent. Hurley's engaging digital illustrations in simple, striking shapes provide the necessary context. A lengthy author's note offers information on a frog's life cycle.

This simple but visually arresting book follows the daily activities of a family of cottontail rabbits--eating, playing, fleeing predators, etc. Each episode occupies a double-page spread and is encompassed by a single verb such as "hide" or "peek," an effectively minimalist narrative device that enhances pre-reader appeal. Spacious compositions, some with cutaway views of underground scenes, add drama. Further information about cottontails appended.

A dog chases a ball thrown into the ocean, meeting various beach and sea creatures during its joyous adventure, eventually returning to its girl. The red ball stands out in the strong, simple digitally rendered compositions in muted blues, dark greens, and taupes. The text consists of one verb per spread; occasionally the story progression is illogical or confusing.

This simple debut picture book accomplishes much. Each page consists of only one word ("nest / warm / hatch / grow"), all of which add up to a complete, full-circle narrative. Striking, dynamic Photoshop illustrations lend the story additional details. The versatility of this book makes it an excellent pick for pre-readers. An author's note offers information about a robin's life cycle.
