Intrigued by the thought of playing at night and sleeping by day, three squirrel siblings sneak out after bedtime and join some owlets, only to find themselves too sleepy to carouse. In a fitting (if somewhat abrupt) resolution, the squirrels create a mailbox for corresponding with their nocturnal owl friends. Attractive, delicately colored illustrations set the scene high in the treetops.

In this old-fashioned picture book, three squirrel children take shelter from a thunderstorm in a cave occupied by two mice; soon a bunny joins them. Iwamura's delicate paintings use fine black lines for outlining each of the many real, recognizable plants, with most of the pages made up of sky to give the perspective of small creatures in a big world.

Squirrel siblings Mick, Mack, and Molly enjoy the beauty and wonder of changing seasons. In Spring, they come across a hungry baby bird and wonder what it likes to eat. In Snow, they coax their papa to warm up by riding on a sled. The stories are slight but warmhearted, with cheerful and expressive illustrations. Review covers these titles: Hooray for Snow! and Hooray for Spring!

With winter on its way, a mother squirrel knits red sweaters for her three children. The trio soon notices that their sweaters' hue is echoed in the seasonal changes around the forest; even the sky has "a great red glow." This slight but warmhearted celebration of fall is illustrated with autumnal reds, oranges, and yellows.

An English text illustrated by Carle runs to the midpoint of the book; a Japanese text illustrated by Iwamura runs the opposite direction. Both texts tell the same simple story--a dog on its way to visit a child is joined by various animals. Bilingual kids are the best audience, but all readers can appreciate both sets of attractive illustrations in this innovative book.
