Short phrases of rhyme and near-rhyme suggest intermittent dozing and viewing as the scene below changes, even though the perspective remains the same. Double-page views are illustrated in warm, soft-edged colors, with a sleeper-garbed baby in various poses outside the street frame.

(3) 1-3 Illustrated by Ange Zhang. The narrator and his brother save the life of their neighbor Mr. Richard, to whom their family owes money, but they receive no thanks. Despite the snub, the narrator and his father help Mr. Richard clear a field of stones. After a night of shared toil, the debt is forgiven. The rich, painterly illustrations capture the farm/wilderness setting of this quiet paean to the power of perseverence.
