After graduation, seventeen-year-old Connor can't forget his teacher, Ms. Timms. So when she contacts him and their relationship turns romantic, he's determined to maintain their closeness at all costs. The relatively short text is packed with intense issues, including violence, teenage sexuality, and a family history of alcoholism, that are only briefly addressed, making the plot gripping but choppy.

Letters, e-mails, and newspaper articles recall what may have happened during a mysterious Halloween night "attack" in the woods. Emmet (now confined to a mental health facility), his sister Niki, and their neighbor Doug serve as intriguingly unreliable narrators in a story that may be about shapeshifting or may be about madness. Unfortunately, the novel's fascinating premise is damaged by an over-the-top conclusion.

Not for the prudish reader, this is the first-person, present-tense story of lonely, overweight Robin. Part wide-eyed innocent, part peeping Tom, part "horny slut," the fifteen-year-old is surrounded by beautiful people--including her parents--behaving badly, and for a time she joins their "parallel universe." Often hilarious, this poignant tale graphically depicts a teenager's stormy coming of age.
