Each double-page spread of this pioneering, structurally experimental picture book contains thirteen illustrations, including a numeral counting down with the page turn and a key-like composite image previewing what's to come. The discrete pictures tell cumulative stories and occasionally influence one another's. Per the original review: "The book may have to be introduced to children because it is not immediately obvious. But books that break new ground seldom are."
