An amiable elf marches into an industrialized city where adults work long hours and children constantly sweep the rats away. With a newly acquired magical pipe, the elf is able to turn the rats into stars. Employing ink and pencil, watercolor and acrylics, Kellogg creates a gold-tinged, phantasmagorical city peopled with expressive characters of all ages.

Eleven of Kellogg's picture books (two of which he illustrated only) are included in this weighty volume. The stories include Can I Keep Him? (1971), Pinkerton, Behave! (1979), and the 2002 edition of The Mysterious Tadpole. An introduction by actress Helen Hunt and afterword by Barbara Elleman add personal, biographical, and critical reflections.

Kellogg has created new illustrations for and rewritten his story of Louis's mysterious tadpole that grows into a Loch Ness monster. The humor and exaggeration are still intact, and both the energetic, newly colorful art and the text contains more dialogue. This increased clarity comes at the expense of the nuances and surprises of the original edition.

Pinkerton's paternal longings are stirred by his owner Emily's new knowledge that a father emperor penguin cradles his egg on his feet. Kellogg's watercolor washes and joyfully detailed acrylic paintings tell much of the story, as Pinkerton first cradles a football on his paws for a whole day, then disrupts a football game, and later turns a dog show into a rollicking fiasco.

In this reworking of Kellogg's 1974 book The Mystery of the Missing Red Mitten, both text and illustrations have been redone, although the core story is essentially unchanged. The original book was quite small, and the illustrations were black and white except for the red mitten. This large, full-color edition is easier to find on the shelf, but much of the charm is gone and the mitten is certainly lost on the busy pages.

Using the old counting song "This Old Man" as a starting point, Kellogg adds nine wacky new verses. His illustrations, filled with humorous details and dialogue bubbles, introduce a delightful assortment of old men playing nick-nack and handing out bones, including a snow sculptor, a chicken-napper, and an umpire with a Seeing Eye dog. Includes music and an author's note about the song.

A gentleman poised to marry a farmer's daughter is put off by the silly sensibilities of the girl and her family and vows he won't return to marry her until he can find "three sillies even sillier than you are." Told with great humor, this well-known English folktale and its bright and busy illustrations share a no-holds-barred sense of fun.
