Now that Tyrus (The Diabolic) has claimed the throne, genetically engineered humanoid Nemesis is poised to become Empress--but not everyone accepts the idea of a "creature" like Nemesis in power. To prevent a coup, Nemesis must prove her humanity without resorting to her killer instincts. Info-dumping and complicated politics bog down the action somewhat, but fans will find this second entry in the dystopian trilogy compelling nonetheless.

(3) YA Nemesis is a Diabolic: a lab-grown humanoid designed to act as bodyguard to Sidonia, a young member of the elite theocracy. When Sidonia is summoned to the Imperial Court by the corrupt Emperor, Nemesis is disguised and sent in her stead. Kincaid's space opera, full of twists and double-crosses, is a page-turner that should engage fans of dystopian fiction and romance.

(3) YA In this satisfying trilogy conclusion (Insignia; Vortex), cadet Tom Raines and his friends discover power dynamics have shifted at the Pentagonal Spire, where they continue their Intrasolar Forces training. New regulations are not just frustrating but dangerous as well, and what follows are more of the high-tech thrills and action that fans of the series have come to expect.

Tom's loyalty is torn between his friends and his country, and his idealism and arrogance have gotten him into trouble with both his allies and enemies. Breathtaking action, elite technology, humor, and themes of friendship will appeal to fans of the series.

(3) YA Fourteen-year-old virtual-reality gamer Tom goes from hustling gamblers to training for "offshored conflict" warfare in space. Tom makes new friends and some enemies at the Intrasolar Forces academy, the Pentagonal Spire. As he goes up against his greatest opponent, he begins to discover his own superior combative talents. Fast-paced technological action, adventure, intrigue, and likable characters will appeal to sci-fi fans.
