As she begins fifth grade, Penelope has to deal with the absence of her best friend Tim, who died of cancer over the summer, as well as the embarrassing presence of her father, the new school janitor. The lonely protagonist writes messages to Tim on a memo pad and eventually reaches out to other classmates in a serviceable novel somewhat lacking in emotional resonance.
