Faced with a witch attack and penned in by giants, Evie and her fellow third-year Princess Cadets (Pennyroyal Academy and sequel) sneak out of their besieged school to retrieve a magic harp to neutralize the giants. The many characters and complicated backstory have become confusing, but fairy-tale predicaments and deeply felt family drama buoy the continuation of this lightly comic action-adventure series.

Returning to Pennyroyal Academy for her second year of training, Princess Cadet Evie encounters a group of failed former cadets who want to burn down the Academy. Can she convince others at school of the threat? This sequel doesn't recap the complicated premise of Pennyroyal Academy, leaving some readers potentially adrift, but for established fans, the action and magical adventure are first rate.

Evie, a new recruit at Pennyroyal Academy, takes her training as a princess seriously--she wants to protect innocents from the witches attacking the Eastern Kingdoms--but her sympathy toward dragons puts her at odds with Remington, a charming knight-in-training. This unusual military-toned addition to the princess genre contains twists to throw readers off balance before rounding to a satisfying conclusion.
