A ginkgo tree tells its story of growing up watching the human inhabitants of a multistory apartment building. As the happy tree ages, it learns that sadness and loneliness are also part of life. The earthy palette and thin, delicate lines successfully evoke feelings of happiness, loneliness, and sadness while the changing of the leaves implies the passage of time.

One gray day, young Mina uses her crayon to draw snowflakes in the sky. They fall, creating a snow-capped natural world to explore. Her crayon also assists various animals (e.g., a bear stuck in a cave needs a door). The book lacks the impact of its obvious antecedent, Harold and the Purple Crayon, but the wintry scenes dazzle in their large format.
