Closer to an expanded dictionary than an encyclopedia, the book offers two hundred pages of individual dinosaur lore, including size, period, location, diet, and other details. Arranged chronologically, this overview of mostly prehistoric animal life features a description of each era, discusses species that arose, and offers reasons for some species' extinction. Each chapter concludes with an illustrated "gallery" of extinct creatures. This book is useful for basic facts (despite the rather drab illustrations and encyclopedic-style text), but students will need to supplement the information provided here. Bib., glos., ind.
