When Otto's birthday is stolen, he goes into a backwards land where palindromes, opposites, and all things "topsy-turvy" abound. Even birthdays are backwards there, which helps Otto figure out what they're really about. Bright cartoon illustrations and a graphic-novel format will engage emergent readers.

(3) K-3 Toon Book series. Siblings Mona and Joey argue over everything, including the crime-fighting suit given to them by the Mighty Mojo upon his retirement. After Mom makes it into two suits, Mo and Jo must learn to work together to defeat the evil Saw-Jaw at the town parade. Sibling rivalry is channeled into heroics in this adventure with lively comics-style illustrations.

(2) K-3 Toon Book series. Illustrated by Frank Cammuso. Comic books meet picture books in these titles. Silly introduces the seasons through a child's experiences. In Benny, mouse siblings squabble about playing together. Otto is a takeoff on "King Midas." All feature panels and speech balloons, and palettes change from book to book; Lilly uses bright colors, Benny employs pastels to add sweetness, and Otto is all about orange.
