The Big Bad Wolf has the same sunny-day routine: he pursues various small animals, and they outwit him every time. While the sly text focuses on characters' actions/reactions, the spare illustrations show rainy-day scenes of the forest devoid of animals: the wolf sleeps in, therefore nothing happens. Readers who are up for a brain-teasing challenge will dig this shaggy-dog story.

An unseen narrator yells at Tickle Monster claiming not to be scared. The monster, consisting of bold, flat shapes against a clean black background, is taken apart one piece at a time and rearranged into a homey scene. This descendant of Emberley's Go Away, Big Green Monster gives young readers satisfying control over their emotions and the story's outcome.

Six male caribou rendered in crisp cut paper (unfortunately they're largely indistinguishable) compete in a droll running race. Their competitive fervor gets intense ("he'll try anything--even the infamous banana-peel trick"), verging on cruel at times (one competitor is tied up), but children will likely find it all hilarious. Pleasingly, the actual champion isn't the only triumphant one in the hoopla.

A number of animals eagerly travel to see an egg hatch, but "What on earth...?"--a pig pops out instead. (A satisfying twist reveals that it's a chick in a pig costume.) Sharp cut-paper illustrations picture the animals dressed like tourists with sporty clothes and cameras in tow. The spare text adds humor that subtly spoofs mass-media attention.

This imaginative game introduces seven different colored shapes: "Whose are they?" A chicken says she found them; a fish insists they're his because he cut them into the pieces; a bird asserts he made the paper from leaves; etc. The wind blows the pieces into a pile, with the final text addressing the reader: "They're yours now too. What will you do?"
