YA
The rebellion against the evil king of Alban builds to a final battle in which protagonist Neryn's ability to call forth the magical "fey" folk holds the key to victory. Plotting is languidly paced but immersive, underlaid by well-developed relationships, an impressively detailed ensemble cast, and a fully realized world. A good bet for fans of Garth Nix and Melina Marchetta.

Having joined Regan's Rebels in their stand against cruel King Keldec (Shadowfell), Neryn quests to find the supernatural mentors who can prepare her magical gifts for the coming revolution. The myth-infused Celtic landscape, well-developed female friendship, and political complexities sustain interest despite languid pacing, and fans will be pleased to see all the pieces in place for a concluding volume.

Alban is a dangerous world since King Keldec came to power. Neryn, an orphan concealing magical powers, hopes to find the hidden rebels at their training ground, Shadowfell. Neryn's powers and the myriad fantastic creatures are intriguing, but Marillier does more telling than showing in this first volume of a planned trilogy about a world on the brink of chaos.

Paula (Wildwood Dancing) sails to Istanbul with her merchant father. A series of magical signs lead her on a perilous quest, calling on her scholarship, wits, and bravery. Marillier's exotic Istanbul, with its rich blend of musical languages and bright costumes, is a plausible threshold to the magical Old Kingdom and a vivid backdrop for Paula's thrilling journey.

The castle of Piscul Dracului, which sits at the threshold between two worlds, is home to five sisters. When their father becomes ill, their vengeful cousin threatens the future of both worlds. Drawing on folklore and the evocative Transylvanian setting, Marillier creates original characters. She plants clues early on and keeps pages turning with suspenseful twists and two romances.
