Who Was...? series.
Illustrated by
Elizabeth Wolf.
Once past the unflattering cover caricatures, these informative biographies provide useful details on each subject's life, family, and career. The lack of divisions within chapters makes the books a little less accessible, although black-and-white drawings and occasional spreads on related topics help break up the text. Timeline. Bib. Review covers these Who Was...? titles: Who Was John F. Kennedy?, Who Was Louis Armstrong?, and Who Was Ronald Reagan?.

All Aboard Science Reader series.
Illustrated by
Pete Mueller.
This easy reader focuses on how honeybees make honey, how they are different from other bees, and what life in the hive is like. In addition, information about beekeeping is included in the discussion. Some topics, such as bee communication, are oversimplified, but in general this book will encourage further study. The illustrations extend the text.

Although reduced to barely an outline, the well-known events in Sacagawea's life are described in simple language and sentences. Illustrations in warm tones on each page help early readers visualize the Northwest frontier setting.

Step into Reading series.
Illustrated by
Richard Courtney.
Accompanied by generic illustrations, this straightforward beginning reader introduces tractor-trailer trucks, auto-haulers, farm trucks, construction trucks, and other large work vehicles in simple, uninspired (though age-appropriate) language. Each new term is underlined for emphasis. There's nothing new here, but this may have appeal to reluctant new readers.

In simple, clear language, Milton purports to tell the true story of Pocahontas and John Smith, including the alternative theory that Pocahontas may have saved Smith's life in response to her father's instructions rather than out of love. The narrative is compelling, if somewhat romantic in its interpretation of Pocahontas's life. Golden-hued illustrations capture the mood of the tale.
