Illustrated by
Emma Dodd.
This book offers a running definition of what it means to be a friend but fails to relay what, exactly, elevates a friendship to a "best" friendship. (The qualities described--sharing, playing games together, etc.--seem true of all friendships.) Regardless, the flat, speech bubble-filled images of kids interacting are inviting, and Nilsen doesn't neglect to mention that arguments are part of the friendship package.

Animal Antics series.
Illustrated by
Anni Axworthy.
Very brief texts list nine animals, culminating with children, that dig and burrow, hang and dangle, leap and jump, or swim and dive. In each book, the titular refrain finishes each sentence. This repetition gets somewhat irritating, and some sentences feel forced to fit the structure. But the bold, colorful cartoon illustrations with heavy black outlines are just right for the audience. [Review covers these Animal Antics titles: Let's Dig and Burrow, Let's Hang and Dangle, Let's Leap and Jump, Let's Swim and Dive.]

An opening cartoon strip sets up the premise: thirty paintings at a museum have been stolen and replaced by forgeries. Using a magnifying strip that is included with the book and the "museum catalog," the reader must identify which pictures are genuine and which are fakes. Information about the paintings (by artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt) is included in the busy pages, giving this spot-the-differences book an educational aspect. Glos.
