O'Reilly's well-known voice and blustery demeanor come through loud and clear in this breathless narrative account of the events leading up to the dropping of the atomic bomb and the end of WWII. An abundance of (poorly reproduced) photographs, short chapters, and staccato-style sentences make the volume (adapted from the adult book Killing the Rising Sun) an undemanding read. O'Reilly contrasts the lives and deaths of JFK and his assassin Oswald in episodic chapters that recreate the 1960s and capture important moments. Photographs and illustrations are ample and well selected, and the narrative is energetic and easy to read. See also James L. Swanson's "The President Has Been Shot!", which offers a more in-depth (and less personal) treatment.

Dwight Jon Zimmerman.
This book chronicles the last days of the Civil War, the events leading to Lincoln's assassination, and the flurry involved in bringing the conspirators to justice. The present-tense narrative is well written and concise. Archival photographs and drawings add clarity and interest. A lengthy afterword provides additional information, but the lack of source notes is unfortunate. Reading list, websites. Bib., glos., ind.
