After the events of Summoned, Sean goes to the Order for magical training, but Professor Marvell confines him to studying theory. When fellow student Daniel reveals his mixed heritage as a monstrous sea-dwelling Deep One, Sean turns to the devious Reverend Orne for help reuniting Daniel with his mother. Though the pace lags, this volume has a lighter tone than its Lovecraftian predecessor.

At an arcane bookstore in Arkham, Massachusetts, Sean finds a clipping directing him to a reverend seeking an occult apprentice. But when Sean attempts the Reverend's test, the unbound Lovecraftian monster he summons threatens Sean and his family. A deliberative pace keeps the action at a slow boil, but fans of Lovecraft and his grotesque chthonic horror will enjoy the dark atmosphere.
