Peggy Grahame, newly orphaned, returns to the family estate and is visited by the ghosts of four of her colonial ancestors who help her to unravel several mysteries from the family's past. While this entertaining story doesn't have the depth and complexity of Pope's The Perilous Gard, it is still a thoroughly worthwhile read.

Equal parts historical fiction, romance, and fantasy, this richly imagined novel is based on the Scottish legend of Tam Lin. The haunting pen-and-ink illustrations of the original edition have been retained in this welcome reissue of a Newbery Honor book.
