Five spreads introduce the Star Wars universe as depicted in episodes one through three of George Lucas's famous film franchise. Elaborate pop-ups portray podracing, monsters, a droid, space vehicles, and Lord Darth Vader--complete with a light-up, color-changing lightsaber. Pop-up master Reinhart maximizes space by including detailed text inside foldout mini-books containing their own small pop-ups. An ambitious and comprehensive visual stunner.

Reinhart and Sabuda divide the wonderful world of dragons and monsters into six major categories, creating a glorious double-page pop-up for each. Not a millimeter of space is wasted; the pop-ups easily fold inside themselves and each spread additionally contains a series of foldout mini-books. The text, often showing humor, acts as extended captions for the illustrations.

Reinhart and Sabuda provide an introduction to world mythologies. The book's defining characteristic is the elaborate, very impressive pop-ups that accompany the serviceable text. Occasionally, though, the layout feels cramped, with the larger, central pop-ups getting in the way of the text and of the smaller, secondary design elements.

Three familiar nursery rhymes appear on each spread. The primary rhyme, in the center, boasts a large, complex pop-up, while the other two, in the corners, are accompanied by simpler pop-ups under separate flaps. The colorful illustrations are well engineered, opening smoothly without the need to pull or poke (still, given the age of the nursery rhyme audience, one wonders how long these pop-ups will last).

This pop-up volume focuses on size. The creatures are large and fierce, leaping from the pages into superb three-dimensional action poses. Each spread features a central large figure; small booklets on every page contain multiple flaps. The paper engineering is breathtakingly creative and fun to play with, allowing kids to observe in three dimensions what prehistoric creatures may have looked like.

In this adaptation of Kipling's classic, each turn of the page reveals a large intricately engineered pop-up tableau as well as smaller vignettes that unfold in corners. The most impressive of the pop-ups include monkeys swinging from a towering temple and fierce Shere Khan the tiger ready to pounce on his prey Mowgli. The creative bravura of these pop-ups--many even have flocking--will amaze readers.

A comical version of the old-fashioned naturalist's handbook, Insect-lo-pedia describes the origins, life cycle, and characteristics of insects as a group, as well as the behavior of particular types of insects. Designed to be both whimsical and informative, the book pairs clear, interesting snippets of factual information with illustrations of insects, both realistic and amusingly anthropomorphized.
