(2) YA Newly minted necromancer Nedra (Give the Dark My Love, rev. 9/18) has only one goal--to fully restore life to her twin sister, whom she had previously attempted to raise from the dead. Meanwhile, love interest Grey allies himself with the Emperor in hopes of attaining a pardon for Nedra, who is under penalty of death for necromancy. Their encounters are romantic (even steamy), but Grey's love for Nedra can't overcome his distaste for her magic. The Emperor's deviousness is greater than it seems: will Grey and Nedra resolve their differences before they each become a pawn in the Emperor's game? The horror that fueled the first book gets dialed back a notch here, making for somewhat more comfortable reading (though still delivering substantial dismemberments and executions), while the romance and the characters' individual struggles come to the foreground. At the end, Revis delivers a clever expansion of the premise, which ties together multiple plot threads to close the duology in unexpected and highly gratifying ways.

(2) YA Medical alchemy student Nedra seeks a cure for the Wasting Death. When she finds her family dying of the disease, the strictures against the Fourth Alchemy--necromancy--seem suddenly irrelevant. Revis's original take on the undead steers clear of tired tropes, but it's Nedra's connection with her twin sister, and the frightening transformations she works on her, that bring home the true queasiness of this horror tale.

(2) YA Two alternating, emotionally entangling first-person narrations present different versions of events: Bo tells readers that he attends an exclusive boarding school for students with supernatural powers; his sister Phoebe reveals that Bo suffered a mental breakdown. In YA's answer to Shutter Island, Bo's delusions ensnare readers, who will then find themselves unable to escape the terrified confusion and distrust as his reality shatters.

(2) YA This trilogy ender picks up with Earth-born Amy and ship-born leader Elder poised to leave Godspeed and make planetfall on Centauri-Earth. Throughout the series, Revis has brought real and immediate emotions to sci-fi scenarios and here she invests that skill in making readers feel the awe and wonder facing humanity as the characters step out onto an alien planet for the first time.

(2) YA Prematurely awakened from her frozen sleep in Across the Universe, Amy is having trouble adjusting to claustrophobic life aboard the generation ship Godspeed. Now that their sixteen-year-old leader (and Amy's love interest) Elder has discontinued the drug that kept the populace subdued, the workers are getting rebellious. This second volume in an intended trilogy keeps readers enthralled with solid construction and a fast pace.

(2) YA Amy and her parents are cryogenically frozen for a three-hundred-year trip through space to a new colony. After being accidentally awakened, she discovers that other sleepers are being killed. Revis establishes the setting in such a pressing way that readers truly feel the characters' plight. Taut, urgent prose sustains tension right up through an unsettling resolution that leaves plenty to think about.
