These compact books "adapted from" Rey's Anybody at Home? (Whose House?) and Where's My Baby? (Farm Babies) feature peppy rhymes, sturdy card-stock pages with lift-the-flaps, and Rey's trademark clean-lined illustrations in vibrant hues. This fiftieth-anniversary edition of the story originally published to ease fears about the hospital features an afterword by Boston Children's Hospital's Dr. Frederick H. Lovejoy Jr. explaining how some things have changed ("men and women serve as both nurses and as physicians"), while others, such as the high quality of care, remain the same. Eight previously published stories written and illustrated "in the style of" the Reys appear in this compendium. George goes to the zoo, the dentist, a bookstore, a sleepover; chases an ice-cream truck; joins a basketball team; saves up for a toy; and writes thank-you notes. It's everything fans of these newer George stories--with their passable illustrations and bland story lines--would expect.

This hefty collection brings together the seven original stories, with complete texts and illustrations as originally published. A new photo scrapbook by Louise Borden of the Reys' creation of the character is appended; a free audiobook, narrated by actor John Krasinski, is available with the volume. Not exactly a cozy bedtime book, but the production quality is good and the artwork clear and bright.

Illustrated by
Mary O'Keefe Young.
Written by Monica Perez. George the monkey is afraid of going to the dentist. When, however, he sees an even more frightened child, he cheers the child up--and creates chaos. In the process he discovers the dentist isn't scary after all. George's romp, in this didactic and predictable story, is accompanied by cheerful watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations reminiscent of H. A. Rey's originals.

While these thirteen stories may look like Rey originals, none of the texts actually is. Three of the tales use Rey's illustrations; the rest are adequately rendered in his style. All the texts are adaptations; the majority adapted from George's previously published "new adventures." The stories are mostly predictable and formulaic, but for George's diehard fans this will be a welcome collection.

This book, newly revised and updated, "is meant for people who...want to be able to go out at night and find the major constellations, for the pleasure of it." Rey presents the constellations' stars with connecting lines that make pictures of Hercules, Pegasus, etc., for ease of visualization. It's a fascinating book, full of scientific information, charts, and lively illustrations. Bib., glos., ind.

A gay picture book in the French manner, about a giraffe who was willing to turn her gifts to good use for the sake of her monkey friends. She acted as a bridge, a see-saw, a boat, and a fire engine, in rapid succession. Her transformations will delight children. This edition of the first story to feature Curious George includes a new afterword.

Billy the Bunny, trying to draw a self-portrait, is "helped" by a parade of animal friends who all try to improve his picture by adding their own features. The resulting creature looks like nothing at all: a puppygoose? a porcuphant? Billy has a little meltdown, and all ends happily with the entire crew of animals setting up easels and drawing pictures of themselves.

Elizabite, a Venus's-flytrap, has the irritating habit of biting just about everyone and anything that gets near enough. She proves her worth one night, however, when those jaws clamp down on a burglar. Both art and rhyming text are replete with Rey's characteristic jaunty, sly humor.

This gift edition of the classic picture book contains a concise, informative introduction by Leonard S. Marcus, an afterword about Margaret and H. A. Rey, and the original watercolors--instead of the preseparated art used in 1941.
