On the Job series.
In Rescue, an accessible text profiles different types of rescue work by trained professionals and amateurs, as well as tools of the trade. Animal looks at the work of zoologists, entomologists, and ornithologists and gives a glimpse at six other animal scientists. Color photos in an inviting design accompany these superficial overviews. Glos, ind. [Review covers these On the Job titles: To the Rescue and Animal Watch.]

Science Links series.
Using a lively narrative style, Ring shows how people have taken inspiration from animal and plant adaptations for inventions of their own: Velcro from burdock plants and sonar from dolphins, among other examples. Each explanation is followed by a brief description of a scientist working on a nature-inspired invention. Color photos and drawings illustrate the text. Websites. Ind.

Science Links series.
Hurricanes and Wildfires look at these natural disasters and their aftermaths; Ring discusses volcanoes; and Water introduces various bodies of water. Though superficial, the easy-to-read texts offer basic information, providing report writers with a good starting point for research. The vivid photos and occasional sidebars are appealing and add some depth. Websites. Glos., ind. [Review covers these Science Links titles: Hurricanes, Ring of Fire, Wildfires, and World of Water.]

Zoo Life series.
Each of these series books focuses on the birth and early life of a baby zoo animal. Along with facts about physical characteristics and behavior, the text also discusses the difference between life in the wild and life in a zoo, raising questions ("Should newborn baby animals be put on public display?") for readers to think about. The texts are clear, as are most, though not all, of the color photos. Glos., ind. [Review covers these Zoo Life titles: Project Elephant and Project Hippopotamus.]

Step into Reading series.
Illustrated by
Lisa McCue.
This simple story follows two polar bear cubs as their mother teaches them to fish, swim, walk on ice, and run from danger. McCue's watercolor illustrations of the "polar babies" are Hallmark cuddly and sweet, and the icy blues and pinks of her polar landscape are cheerful and soothing. Very young readers will likely appreciate Ring's straightforward, repetitive text.
