Pickles, who appears to be a hamster, has many anxieties about starting school ("No one is going to want to be my friend!"); her big brother, Ham, responds to every fear with terrible advice. The mixed-media art verges on the assaultive, but Ham's rejoinders are a hoot.

The author--herself a twin--presents an entertaining look at many aspects of being a twin. Humorous cartoony art, color photos, and a simple text create an appealing package, and profiles of famous twins, twin riddles, short interviews with real-kid twins, and sections containing advice to twins and to their friends and family ("Please remember to take photos of us separately") add to the fun.

Everyone tells dog Grody what to do, so he comes up with his own rules: don't get out of bed or wash; talk when the teacher talks; etc. Finally, the last busy mixed-media illustration shows a dirty, unhappy Grody clutching his dismal report card beneath rule fourteen: "don't follow my rules or you will look just like me-eeeeeeeeee!" While a bit facile, the book will speak to those who feel beset by authority figures.

Ruthie's lengthy rebellion against eating vegetables ends when her dog eats her picnic sandwich, forcing her to try the veggies she's helped her mother grow: no surprise--she likes them. This predictable outcome is lightened by playful folk-art illustrations in electric colors and an omnipresent pug dog to play straight man to Ruthie's insistent refusal.

This rollicking tale follows the adventures of Ernestine, an Irish mail-order bride, who bolts from her unsavory husband-to-be, disguises herself as a man, and joins a group of Texan cowhands until her long red hair gives her away. Black ink and colored marker illustrations, in Rubel's recognizable style, play up the humor.
