Miles's fluid understanding of gender and sexuality feels current, and the distinct Icelandic culture and landscape provides a rich, provocative backdrop for his emotional recovery. Unfortunately, Vivian's flat, stereotypical characterization--related through Miles's instant messages to her--is disappointing.
