Con artist Jo impersonates a missing girl, Vivienne, and is taken in by Vivi's wealthy guardians, no questions asked. Perhaps the family's name (Lovecraft) will tip readers off, but secrets and hidden violence are soon apparent. The narrative, at times addressed to a (gradually revealed) "you," is initially confusing, but this suspenseful novel also has much to say about social class and privilege.

Ben is devastated when his crush, Mira, and her sister Francesca are found drowned in a quarry near their tight-knit, Italian-Catholic Boston suburb. Ben follows a trail of cryptic notes Mira left behind, and alternating chapters flash back to the sisters' last months of grappling, privately, with a supernatural--perhaps holy--phenomenon. This novel is tantalizingly eerie but leaves too many questions unanswered.

When Julia and her best friend, Liv, are attacked in the woods, Julia helps Liv get away before being captured herself. Eventually she escapes, becoming a local hero. A year later, Julia tries to unpack fractured memories that implicate Liv. This psychological mystery builds from the girls' well-developed relationship and secret-filled history, and Savage skillfully sustains tension and atmosphere.
