A blizzard hits Sloan's remote Alaskan community. One resident is injured, necessitating medical attention, so six people, including Sloan, set out for help. But a wolf pack is tracking them... The characters and their relationships are complicated by interwoven histories. A tense survival plot, vivid setting, and the realities of wilderness ecology make this a harrowing and emotionally resonant story.

Detroit teen Astrid's father lost their money betting on the Titans, mechanical metal racing horses. So when Astrid gets a chance to race for the prize money herself, she takes it. The races are full of action and danger, but Astrid's relationships with her friends and her Titan are the emotional core to this sci-fi girl-and-horse story heavily indebted to The Scorpio Races.

This sequel to Fire & Flood finds Tella racing through oceans and mountains as a contestant in the Brimstone Bleed, hoping to win and save her brother's life. This volume does not stand alone, and it's as derivative as the first. Primary and secondary characters (including genetically engineered animal sidekicks) are well developed, though, and the tension escalates intensely until the end.
