Cat thinks the moon is made of milk; Hen says it's an egg; Butterfly, Dog, and Mouse have different ideas (sugar, butter, flour). Rosie isn't sure, so they visit Gran and learn that they're all partially correct. Hillenbrand's uncluttered patterned illustrations complement this traditionally structured story that ends with a delicious batch of cookies. Gran's recipe for sugar cookie moons is included.

A "nervous little swan" prepares for her debut in teacher Miss Faye's ballet. As sets are constructed and costumes sewn, the swan's confidence fails. The lively rhymed text, set to "Over in the Meadow," plays with rhythm without going overboard. The mixed-media paintings use color (mostly greens, blues, and white, then red for the denouement) and shading to great effect.

In this Jewish version of "The Gingerbread Man," a lonely bubbe makes a matzo ball boy in her soup so he can join her for the Passover Seder. But the matzo ball boy runs away--from the bubbe, from the rabbi, etc. The expressive pictures and light, folksy telling strike just the right tone for the story's sly humor.

As project director in her woodshop, old Ms. Mac draws plans, distributes tools, and shows her animal workforce how to use them. The hammer makes a "tap tap here and a tap tap there"; the drill "a rurr rurr here and a rurr rurr there." And so it goes, inspiring a cacophonic chorus that will emphasize the loud in read-aloud.
