In the apocalyptic aftermath of a nuclear war between the faerie and human realms, both worlds are literally crumbling away. Challenging their races' mutual hatred and prejudice, humans and faeries work to save both worlds. The emotional beats are stilted, but this innovative fantasy trilogy's (Bones of Faerie; Faerie Winter) closer continues to explore complex concepts, bringing character arcs to fitting conclusions.

Liza (Bones of Faerie), like all children born after the war with Faerie, has magical abilities; as a Summoner, she must use her powers to prevent the Faerie Queen from exterminating all surviving humans. Simner's lyrical prose occasionally verges on melodramatic. Her magical dystopian setting, while not quite fully realized, is nevertheless fascinating.

Desperately searching for her missing mother, sixteen-year-old Haley visits Iceland and becomes entangled in an ancient spell that could destroy the world. Each of the disparate characters struggles to accept the circumstances of his or her own life, grounding the fantastical plot. Icelandic sagas and mythologies build a rich framework; the sincerity of the characters' flaws and longings resonates most strongly.

Deadly magical mutations mark the landscape, the result of a terrible war with the fairy world. Liza, whose community uses horrifying means to cleanse themselves of magic, flees persecution because of her own emerging fairy traits; in the process, she discovers the true nature of her world. The unique premise is dazzling, but the execution is distractingly melodramatic.
