Following the death of his soldier brother, David's grief-stricken parents have turned to religion--specifically a fundamentalist cult--for solace. His recovering-alcoholic father speaks only in Bible verses; his mother is fixated on the upcoming Rapture, or Rush. When his parents disappear, David must untangle the mystery. Chapter flashbacks to "Before the Rush" alternate with "Now" in this nuanced study of relationships, religion, and faith.

Aura and Zachary (Shade) must hide the fact that the "Shift," which caused ghosts to become visible, coincided with their births. Zachary is held for questioning by a shady government agency; Aura risks herself to free him. Reunited, they travel to the UK to research their connection to the Shift. The combination of supernatural mystery and nuanced romance is entrancing.

In this Shade sequel, Aura has put aside her feelings for Zachary in hopes of bringing Logan back--or at least helping him "pass on" in a blaze of rock-star glory. But as Zachary and Aura piece together clues to the Shift, it becomes difficult to stay platonic. Smith-Ready's intricate world, full of complex characters and authentic relationships, continues to be intriguing.

Aura can communicate with ghosts, like everyone else born after the Shift. This occasionally inconvenient ability turns terribly painful when her boyfriend Logan suddenly dies and begins haunting her. Aura's growing attraction to her compassionate (and cute) research partner, Zachary, further confuses her. An original premise, complex characters, and well-wrought tension will leave readers wanting to know more.
