This biography of the great Hopi distance runner romanticizes his background, but it provides a clear and simply written account of his accomplishments--including a silver medal in the 1912 Olympics, setting a U.S. record that was not broken until 1964. Swirling pictographs in the otherwise realistic and well-composed illustrations are distracting. Timeline. Bib.

Williams's compelling personal journey--slave, free woman, forced Union laundress, Buffalo Soldier (disguised as a man), Western entrepreneur--is told sympathetically and in some detail, despite the text's awkward transitions. Dark-hued illustrations are somewhat static, though the skills--from cooking to shooting a rifle to sewing clothing--and determination of this remarkable woman emerge clearly. Timeline. Bib.
