Alenna (The Forsaken; The Uprising) and fellow rebels implement their last assault on the tyrannical UNA. But when a betrayal endangers the entire rebel cause, Alenna struggles to preserve her ideals and hopes of democracy. Though predictable and with a tendency to moralize, this fast-paced conclusion to the dystopian trilogy delivers the intense action genre fans expect.

An attack on their temporary sanctuary forces them to flee, resulting in a dangerous and icy journey that threatens to tear them apart. While the characters can be two-dimensional, Stasse invites readers into her chaotic world.

After failing, sixteen-year-old Alenna lands on Prison Island Alpha with other teens also allegedly predisposed to violence; she must struggle to survive, prove her worth, and uncover her true origins. Despite some uneven pacing, readers will invest in the characters of this dystopian novel.
