Containing illuminating detail and the gentlest touches of wit, these homely retellings are great fun for reading aloud, and bits of verse, beautifully scanned, provide an incantatory charm of their own. William Steig's line-and-watercolor illustrations are humble and funny, and the book's compact size is just right for a little one-on-one session in cultural literacy.

(3) YA Illustrated by William Steig. Divine combines the Steigs' 1990 collection of biblical poetry ("Old Testament") and their 2001 book of mythology peppered with poems ("Zeus"). This edition is designed with lots of white space, making William Steig's loose-lined watercolor and ink illustrations stand out, especially the color ones in "Zeus." (And not just because of their bawdiness; the 2001 edition's eye-popping cover illustration is missing, but female nudity still abounds.) ("Zeus": 2001, HarperCollins, rev. 5/01. (3) 4-6 Illustrated by William Steig. This book of animal verse features lots of white space, which makes William Steig's loose-lined black-and-white watercolor and ink illustrations stand out. Jeanne Steig's poetry remains consistently clever. The lemming: "A lem to the slaughter," indeed!

(4) K-3 Illustrated by William Steig. The verse, arranged alphabetically, is uneven in its appeal and appropriateness for children. Some of the selections will be grasped immediately and produce chuckles; others will merely puzzle young readers. The illustrations are vintage Steig. This edition features a smaller trim size.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Britt Spencer. Good-natured yokel Quantz gets fleas from a dog. He then trades them for a passerby's annoying uncle, whom he trades for some Limburger cheese, and so on, until he's left with what he thinks is a worthless bone. Told with a rural twang and illustrated with comical down-home mixed-media illustrations, the story stays one satisfying step ahead of readers to the end.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Sandy Turner. Steig takes a gentle cowpoke at the conventions of cowboy poetry with these three tales from Gizzard's Grill, the center of the action in the small dusty town of Fiasco. The rhymes are clever and read aloud well, and Steig wisely allows the stories to govern the wordplay rather than the other way around. Turner's illustrations are loopily droll and expertly caricatured.
