Upon first meeting Randal, the kennel boy won in a chess game and given to a knight, readers enter and live in the turbulent time of medieval England. Few stories of the Middle Ages bring the whole ritual of knighthood and the life of the feudal manor within the reader's realm as does this one.

Set in fourth-century Britain, this compelling story centers on Alexios Flavius Aquila, a young Roman commander sent to the empire's northernmost British outpost. The hardened troops have little use for their new commander, and Alexios has to earn their respect. Sutcliff is peerless at depicting her characters' internal struggles and never flinches from showing that good and evil are not absolutes.

Sutcliff tells the story of the last Vikings in Britain being pushed back by the conquering Normans. The story alternates between Frytha, a Saxon girl taken in by Norsemen, and Bjorn, an apprentice harper. The sense of place is vivid, the action fierce and brutal, and the historical record never compromised by any quest for a happy ending.

Sutcliff's admirers will rejoice at the posthumous publication of a novel about a young Viking warrior. Bjarni Sigurdson is barely sixteen when he is banished from his settlement on the west coast of Scotland for accidentally killing a man. Sutcliff's careful handling of how a young man deals with the difficult choices that lead to maturity is nothing short of masterly. An unexpected and most welcome gift.
