Wings of Fire series.
Adapted by Barry Deutsch.
Illustrated by
Mike Holmes.
Color by Maarta Laiho. Five young dragons are destined to fulfill a prophecy to end the war among dragon tribes. In the graphic novel adaptation of the first title in Sutherland's popular fantasy series, the illustrations translate rather than enhance the original story. Still, they have some clever moments, and a dynamic panel layout should keep pages turning.

YA
Gus, Diana, Kali, and Tigre, mortal teenage avatars for gods battling to regain control of a world that forgot them, are supposed to be killing one another--not fleeing their pantheons and working together to save the world. Sutherland wisely focuses the narrative on her four lively and likable main characters, driving her rousing, suspenseful trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.

YA
Ancient gods battle in a post-apocalyptic landscape via mortal avatars--confused, rebellious teenagers not at all sure they want to kill, much less die, for their ungracious gods or for dominion over an empty world. The narrative jumps among perspectives, but readers will breathlessly follow the riveting story line as it hurtles to a cliffhanger ending.

YA
After cataclysmic events destroy their countries, five teenagers, herded by unseen powers toward a mysterious purpose, discover that they are virtually the only human survivors in a bizarre landscape of beautiful, horrifying creatures. Multiple interwoven story lines and crafty plot twists build continual tension in this post-apocalyptic page-turner.

YA
Part of a high school production of Romeo and Juliet, this novel's four main characters are really acting out A Midsummer's Night Dream. Dmitri's need to have what rival Alex has sets off a chain of events that parallels the romantic entanglements in Shakespeare's play. Sutherland's set up is believable; she handles especially well the role of the irate, uncompromising father.
