In this new, refurbished edition (intended for publication in 1964), the Plaza's infamous six-year-old resident is still enchantingly self-absorbed and out of control. Knight's signature black-and-white line drawings, here accented with blue in addition to the classic red and pink, have lost none of their verve, wit, and panache. Thompson may have pulled the plug in 1964, but fans will be grateful for her relatives' decision to start the faucet running again.

(4) K-3 Illustrated by Hilary Knight. Eloise heads north in a book first published during the Cold War. Setting their usual frantic pace, Eloise and Nanny tour Moscow. Most kids probably won't get the jokes about Russia, but adults who love "this absolutely darling little sweetnik" will find her adventures amusing, even if they are un-p.c. Pen-and-ink drawings use gold instead of Knight's usual pink.

This omnibus edition contains the four titles featuring the six-year-old terror of the Plaza Hotel: Eloise (1955), Eloise in Paris (1957), Eloise at Christmastime (1958), and Eloise in Moscow (1959). The rather daunting volume includes biographical information on both Thompson and Knight. Universally disdained by the children's literature establishment, the Eloise books nonetheless have an enormous and devoted following.

Humorous, often caricatured pen-and-ink drawings and a text peppered with French phrases perfectly capture the ebullient Eloise's excellent adventure.

(3) K-3 Illustrated by Hilary Knight. Exuberant, effusive Eloise prepares to welcome Christmas Day at the Plaza Hotel with "trinkles and sklinkles of glee." Holiday hijinks include spying on frolicking guests and bestowing presents on hotel employees. Hilary Knight's line drawings race and bounce across the page, keeping pace with the madcap energy of the text. Some new illustrations have been added.
