Monsterlike creature George and dog Boris befriend a sea monster named Nepo while nighttime sand-sculpting (gradually, as shown in panels). They eventually reign over a sand castle worthy of a gatefold spread. The darkly colored seaside landscape creates a dreamlike feel, and young readers will likely pore over the colored-pencil illustrations full of nods to imaginer-in-chief Maurice Sendak.

In a bleak "land of broken things," Pandora, a fox dressed in blue, helps a blue bird recover from a broken wing. In gratitude, the bird returns daily with seeds, leaves, and other small gifts...until he doesn't. Pandora is bereft, but plants begin to grow and her home soon flourishes with rebirth. Exquisite colored-pencil and watercolor art finds beauty in both landscapes of this moving fable.

When the Sea Tiger realizes that he's merchild Oscar's only friend, he tries to remedy the situation. Oscar sees the Sea Tiger embracing another sea cat, which compels Oscar to make a merchild friend. While the message is confusing--is it to let go or to stick with one's own kind?--the art, majoring in sea-foam blues, is sumptuous.
