Some chapters are chock-full of the surreal and extraordinary, while others are more quotidian, all presented in a straightforward, conversational tone and through playful, observant art. Recurring characters and visual details--drawn in a slightly unsteady, inviting black line--produce a rewarding interconnectivity between chapters.

(2) K-3 Young bird Lizette is delighted to find a green sock. Her delight quickly turns to disappointment when feline meanies poke fun at her: "What a dummy!...Socks come in pairs!" Friend Bert wears the sock as a cap, which helps Lizette feel better. This charmingly offbeat French import, with childlike pictures, speaks directly to the pleasure kids derive from found objects.
