Well before the spring concert in which Nellie will play a bumblebee, she insists on wearing the oversize bee-striped sweater knit by Grandma. It gets very dirty, and after so many washings it shrinks. Soft-hued illustrations with fine squiggly lines representing Nellie's wild hair capture the messy delights of an active child.

When the lighthouse captain's wife brings home a Newfoundland puppy, trouble ensues. The giant dog chews on the captain's favorite slippers and eats everything in sight. During a storm, however, she earns her keep by rescuing a lost fisherman. Although somewhat awkwardly written, this tale of "what Newfies do" is told with humor and accompanied by appealing ink and watercolor illustrations.
