(2) K-3 In his latest picture book told with comics panels, Wiesner (Mr. Wuffles!, rev. 9/13) presents a new-baby story; the twist here is that the family in question are robots. The recently delivered robot baby requires assembly, but no adult can quite seem to get it right. Big sister Cathode continually offers her assistance but is either ignored or refused. An ensemble cast joins in, adding to the disorder. All control is lost after an uncle's unnerving decision to modify the still-inanimate baby with rockets ("I made some improvements") results in a gloriously chaotic spread of the supercharged infant rocketing around the house. Finally, young Cathode saves the day, calmly and correctly assembling her sibling. The ­dialogue-and-sound-effects text is succinct and nicely punctuates each humorous scenario; however, the luminous, intricately detailed, and endlessly pore-over-able illustrations are the story's driving force. Glowing floors, mirrorlike metallic surfaces, flaming rocket trails, and congratulatory balloons successfully coexist within the same image. A consistent floor-level perspective, lush color palette, and clever details (the family's address is "8700 Alloy Avenue, Crankshaft, FE 3.14159") further enhance the world-building. A concluding surprise signals that the robot family's baby troubles are far from over.

(2) K-3 In Wiesner's latest nearly wordless picture book, a boy exiled to the outfield in a baseball game keeps missing the ball until, in a series of fantastical images, he finally makes the big catch. Wiesner's trademark hyperrealistic art contains unexpected visual narrative twists. The sky-blue and clean-white backgrounds in the acrylic, gouache, and watercolor illustrations make it easier to follow the book's flights of fancy.

(2) 4-6 Illustrated by David Wiesner. The main attraction of novelty aquarium Ocean Wonders is a mermaid named Fish Girl. When Fish Girl is befriended by a human, she starts to wonder: what would happen if she got out of her fish-tank prison? Wiesner and Napoli create an intriguing, original graphic-novel tale, featuring Wiesner's trademark clean lines and studied details in watercolor panel illustrations.

(1) K-3 Cat Mr. Wuffles toys with a tiny spaceship. Inside, the little green creatures regroup. Helped by a ladybug, they flee to the space under a radiator, which harbors a thriving insect civilization. Friendship ensues, food and technology are shared, repairs are made, and the cat is foiled. This exemplary almost-wordless book incorporates the delights of Borrowers-style innovations, quintessential cat behavior, and Wiesner's exquisite art.

(2) K-3 Art, a big horned lizard, is intent on finishing his painting when Max, another lizard, barges in. Hoping to divert his irrepressible friend, Art--shortsightedly--provides Max with canvas and paint. Wiesner's visual meditation on the effects of illustrative style is detailed with his signature craft and wit, including an expressive chorus of tiny lizards that point up the fun.

(2) K-3 In Wiesner's latest wordless book, a boy at the beach closely examines items washed up from the sea; when a wave brings forth an old camera, the boy's viewing takes a radical shift. He gets the film developed, allowing Wiesner's imagination great play. The meticulous and rich detail of the clue- and fancy-strewn watercolors makes this fantasy involving and convincing.

(1) K-3 In this postmodern interpretation, the style of the artwork shifts back and forth a few times, as Wiesner explores different realities within a book's pages. The story begins by following the familiar pattern, but the art and dialogue balloons tell another tale: the pigs actually step out of the panel illustrations without being eaten and the perplexed wolf remains behind. There's a lot going on here, but once you get your bearings, this is a fantastic journey told with a light touch.

(1) K-3 At the top of the Empire State Building, a friendly cloud appears to a boy and takes him on a tour of Sector 7, a factory-like satellite where clouds are shaped. The boy draws fantastic shapes of sea life, which confound the regular staff members but inspire the clouds. The illustrations for the wordless story are startlingly and powerfully conceived, the fanciful cloud-shapes both funny and elegant.
