Kingfisher Young Knowledge series.
Organized by habitat or type of dwelling (colony, shell), this book provides snippets of information on the homes of bats, termites, frogs, and other animals. Each busy double-page spread includes cropped close-up photos and a concise text. Ideas for activities, such as making a nest and a hamster playpen, are appended. Ind.

Escalones series.
Cartoon drawings are combined with photographs to provide basic facts about different types of rigs from fire trucks to tractors. The Spanish translation is serviceable at best, but the format is a tad puzzling: factual information is combined with a cutesy story about construction workers. Regardless of its drawbacks, this book will certainly please the big truck and construction vehicle crowd.

Question Time series.
A question-and-answer format presents very basic information about the human body. Each double-page spread discusses a different part of the anatomy. The three main concepts from each spread, summarized in the "Now I Know" boxes, seem randomly chosen. Simplified drawings with labels and a few small photos are included. A short quiz is appended. This book suggests diverse projects and activities to do outdoors. The layout--myriad colorful pictures, oversize pages, short blocks of text--works well. Projects include making teepees, kites, and bird feeders; gardening; monitoring a homemade weather station; and things to do while hiking. Activities that require adult assistance are inconsistently labeled. Ind.

This quick overview of the ballet introduces different types of ballet, famous dances, the people backstage and behind the production's creation, and the training that is important to make a dancer. Most of the color illustrations are bland. This offering is adequate, but there are many other books that cover the subject in more detail for the same audience. Glos., ind.

This updated edition of the popular photo-illustrated word book is essentially identical to the original. Common, familiar objects, animals, and activities--featured in clear, bright photos set against a white background or in small drawings--are grouped together on double-page spreads with such headings as "On the farm" and "Colors, shapes, and numbers." Children will be drawn to the bright, cheerful pages of this first vocabulary lesson.
