In segregated mid-1950s Mississippi, increasing racial strife poses a new dilemma for thirteen-year-old Rose Lee Carter (Midnight Without a Moon). She is caught between conflicting tactics to effect change: peaceful protest or retaliatory violence. With captivating characterization, Jackson has again credibly woven real historical events into a poignant story of hope, friendship, and aspiration, resulting in an insightful, relevant historical novel.

In 1955, the daily drudgery of thirteen-year-old Rose's life with her sharecropper grandparents is precipitously disrupted when Emmett Till is murdered. This nuanced coming-of-age story is deftly delivered, with engaging characters set against a richly contextualized backdrop of life for African Americans during the Jim Crow era. It's also an authentic work of historical fiction about a pivotal incident in the civil rights movement.

Pebble Plus: Mighty Machines series.
"Bulldozers push dirt. Bulldozers are mighty machines." Geared to beginning readers, this brief, uninspired look at bulldozers alternates a minimal captionlike text with full-page photographs of the machine in action. While the presentation works better in this book than in others in the series, the appended glossary is far too difficult for the audience. Reading list. Ind.

In rhyming call-and-response format, Ma explains she is too busy with her chores to help this confused little girl put their mixed-up farm back in order--until the cow ends up in the girl's bed. The energetic illustrations help move the fairly predictable story along.
