In this follow-up to Hooray for Hat! and Hooray for Today!, Turtle searches for his favorite book, then remembers he shared it with Zebra, who shared it with Owl, and so on. Anticlimactic page breaks don't reveal the new animal at the same time as the text. However, the colorful illustrations lend characters warmth and personality consistent with their eagerness to share books.

It's nighttime, so of course Owl is "wide awake and ready to play!" She asks her (diurnal) friends to join her, but they're all too tired. Kind Owl helps everyone get to sleep, then sadly returns home. When morning comes, the others want to play--after Owl's nap. Subdued but cheerful hues and midnight-blue backgrounds are just right for the gentle story.

Elephant's grumpy mood dissolves after he finds a box of hats on his doorstep. Cheered, he shares them with each of his friends, lifting their sour moods as well. Clean, richly colored illustrations feature an accumulating procession of upbeat animals, and the contrasting refrains ("GO AWAY! I'M GRUMPY!"; "HOORAY FOR HAT!") emphasize the larger message of the power of sharing one's joy.
