Winners are transported from the deprivation of ruined Earth to the luxury of orbiting city Olympus--but winning and the subsequent fame have a price. This is an exciting tale of friendship, racing, and the lure of celebrity anchored by two strong, relatable female leads.

(3) YA Loner Paul, bully Adam, golden girl Erika, wannabe Caitlyn, and geeky Mark each struggle to survive when a virulent and predatory nanovirus turns Mortingham Boarding Academy into a steampunk-flavored hunting ground of zombie-like machine hybrids. A maestro of atmosphere and primal fear, Wooding uses high-school dynamics, personal growth, and a touch of heroism to humanize this apocalyptic slasher-thriller.

(3) YA Illustrated by Cassandra Diaz. In this graphic novel, Seifer Tombchewer is abducted and forced to impersonate Prince Talon of the Darkling Realm and navigate Talon's relationships, both the close and the contentious. Witty banter and slapstick make this as much a romp as it is a dark fantasy. Diaz's illustrations use depth effectively to show the magnitude of the realm and thus Seifer's new responsibility.

(3) YA Illustrated by Dan Chernett. To save Kady, Seth (Malice) returns to the comic world from which he escaped. With a rebel group called Havoc, Seth tries to prevent evil overlord Tall Jake from spreading his influence to the outside world. Given that the characters can enter a comic book plane, it's too bad more of the action doesn't take place there. Nevertheless, it's an intriguing read.

(3) YA Illustrated by Dan Chernett. Teenagers are disappearing into a nightmare realm by way of Malice, a comic book, and it's up to Seth and Kady to make things right. Interspersed panel illustrations purportedly from Malice contribute little to the overall story, but Wooding's world-building is as intriguing as ever.

(2) YA On the island city of Orokos, Rail and Moa, two ghetto brats, steal an artifact of ancient science, but their thief-master wants the artifact for herself. They flee to Moa's former home; along the way, they're joined by a hideous half-mechanical winged golem. The triangle between Rail, Moa, and the initially innocent golem give this page-turner, salted with liberal amounts of mortal peril, its savor.

(2) YA The plotline--our heroes must thwart a conspiracy of mortals who wish to loose the world's protective bonds and admit a supernatural evil--is scarcely original, but Wooding invests his gothic, alternate-history London with an uncommon creepiness and menace. Stalkings and night murders add suspense; plenty of action moves the pace along swiftly.
