Zhang circumscribes his account of China's Cultural Revolution within the limitations of his own experience and without hindsight: "All I wanted was to be just like the other kids." The tone is a little detached, but the book's real power is in its theatrically composed and richly inked digital paintings. Lengthy appended material fills in the history around Zhang's story.
