A thorough chapter traces the history of Sudan's lengthy civil war, but the book's focus is on the country since 1983. The informative text identifies adversaries and their positions; addresses issues of famine, refugees, and slavery; and discusses the efforts of relief agencies and individual citizens to aid the victims. This volume focuses on the fighting between Sri Lanka's Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic groups that have led to ongoing violence and warfare. The background, history, and politics of the conflict are presented in an unbiased fashion and supported by maps, photos, sidebar explanations, and detailed reference matter.
