Translated by Linda Burgess.
Fans of Richard Scarry, to whom the book is dedicated, may enjoy this collection of scenes ("At Work," "The Farm") and topics ("Vegetables," "Clothes"), all featuring a cast of cartoony dogs. With help, youngsters may even get an idea of what some dogs (a.k.a. humans) do all day, though some sections (e.g., "Insects") seem especially random. Fortunately, the silly art is independently delightful.

A tiger and his animal friends disagree on the type of cake to make: carrot, bone, etc. The story--told in dialogue balloons attached to simple illustrations of the cast--ends with the animals throwing a cake at the tiger. Readers can decide if the name-calling and multiple acts of food-throwing are funny or mean-spirited; the ending hits a sour note.

While walking through the forest one night, Felix encounters ferocious animals. He escapes from them through a door in a tree, after which things get really interesting. That no reason is given for why a pajama-clad boy is taking a nighttime walk in the woods alone only heightens the thrill. Black etchings and crosshatchings reinforce the story's seductively eerie atmosphere.
